St. Pius X Service Day:   “Let Your Light Shine”

Saturday, April 8, 2017

We are currently looking for parishioners who are interested in volunteering in various capacities to make our service day a success this year.  If you would like to help plan this year’s event, please contact Liz Jelstrom at Email: or call 462-1336.

Teams of adult and teenage parishioners (grades 6 and older) participate in service projects at various service organizations throughout Albany, such as cleaning, painting, gardening, etc.  Children in grades K-5 complete age-appropriate service projects at school while their parents serve off-site.  We regret that we do not have suitable activities to accommodate children younger than Kindergarten age.  All participants should plan to eat lunch beforehand.  Snacks for the children and dinner will be provided.

Anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent also taking part in the day either on-site or off-site.

Service Day is an opportunity for us to come together as a community to put into action the “love and serve our neighbor” part of our parish mission statement.  Last year we had 210 parishioners join us as we fanned out to 10 organizations throughout Albany.  This year we hope to top that number!

Mercy Tree Donations

Throughout Lent, we will have Mercy Trees placed at the three entrances to our Church and the front entrance of our Parish School with items that are needed.  We invite you to take a cross from the Mercy Tree and bring the item back and place it in the bins which will be under the trees.  Do not wrap the items.  All donations will go to benefit the children’s stations and to the organizations we serve on that day. All items must be returned no later than March 26.

Your child must be dropped off no later than 12:00 pm at the School Gym and picked up between 4:30-4:45 pm.  Children must be of Kindergarten age or older to participate, and any child who participates must also have a parent participating in St. Pius X Service Day.

Check back later for more details and Registration Information for Service Day 2017.

We encourage families to participate in this program.  The day’s structure makes service accessible to children – for example, making cards or gifts for our nursing home residents or sandwiches or a care package for those residing in homeless shelters.  Parents serve off-site while children in grades K-5 complete supervised, age-appropriate service projects with their peers at the School.  6th graders through high school serve off-site alongside their parent(s).  Encourage your friends and your children’s friends to take part, and the impact will be even greater.

All adults serving as volunteers in the K-5 program and as team captains for the adult teams need to have completed VIRTUS training and a background check.   Please visit the link for the Roman Catholic Diocesan website for upcoming training dates at Background Check information can be found at the bottom of the page.

Team captains will have their list of team members the week before Service Day.  Your team captain will contact you to let you know where you are assigned and give you all pertinent information at that time.  Please note that if you haven’t been contacted by your team captain confirming your work site by April 4, call 518-462-1336 or email for your team assignment.

Any adults planning to work in the K-5 program as volunteers must have their VIRTUS training completed and a background check.  For upcoming VIRTUS training and dates, please visit the Roman Catholic Diocesan Website at
