Parish Athletic Department News: Another Successful Basketball Season

In mid-October 2016, our Parish CYO Basketball Program geared up for another season. Approximately 80 children participated in this program along with 16 coaches, assistant coaches and moderators. This year we had nine (6) CYO basketball teams (2 girls teams and 4 boys teams) playing for St. Pius. Our CYO basketball program continues to be one of the largest (if not the largest) in the Albany Catholic Diocese.

These teams competed in approximately 120 regular season and post season games. We hosted approximately 40 home games over the 3 month season (that averages approximately 4 home games every weekend). One (1) of our teams (Albany Biddy Girls) qualified to represent St. Pius in the Diocesan Playoffs.

After many long hours of practice coupled with scrimmage games, regular season games and tournament games, we have concluded another successful CYO basketball season here at St. Pius X. Therefore, I wish to thank all of the basketball players and their coaches for their hard work this season.

Here is a list of our 2016 – 2017 coaches who gave so unselfishly of their time this season:

Biddy Boys Basketball (5th & 6th Grades) – Jen Morrison, Steven David, Joe Mitchell, Bob Yanni, Sara Gailor and Ned Jones.

Junior Boys Basketball (7th & 8th Grades) – Fred Fuller, Yordan Huban, John Cox, JJ Hogan, Dean DeFruscio and Jim Bollacher.

Biddy Girls Basketball (5th & 6th Grades) – Rick Field and Lou Klender

Junior Girls Basketball (7th & 8th Grades) – Fred Fuller, Kevin Smith and Lou Klender

Also, I wish to thank the parents for all they do in getting the children to practice, to their games and for their commitment to our program. Another big “thank you” goes out to all the parents who volunteered to keep the score book, run the clock, collect admissions, monitor the hallways, working the concession stand and the 50/50 raffle during our home games.

Through the proceeds raised from our CYO Basketball Program we were able to donate over $640.00 to the St. Francis Xavier Orphanage in Haiti.

Our basketball season concluded with our annual Awards Night banquet held on April 5th, 2017. This year approximately 140 people attended the banquet which was held at Shaker Ridge Country Club in Latham. Many people stepped up and helped out to make the banquet a huge success. I wish to thanks all the volunteers who helped organize and contributed their time in preparation for the banquet. Also, I wish to thank all of those people who contributed gifts and donations for our door prize raffle. Without everyone’s support, none of this would be possible.
