Proper Attire for Eucharistic Ministers at St. Pius X
The Albany Diocesan “Guidelines for Extraordinary Ministers
of the
Holy Eucharist” state that:

“Extraordinary ministers should dress in a manner which reflects the dignity of their ministry.”

In the absence of any further specification or description from the diocese with respect to how eucharistic ministers should be dressed when assisting with Communion, St. Pius is adopting the following standards:

  • all clothing should be clean, neat, modest, dignified and appropriate for the occasion.
  • nothing worn on the altar should draw unnecessary attention to the clothing or to the person wearing the clothing.
  • sneakers, flip-flops or other overly casual footwear should not be worn on the altar.
  • shorts, jeans, cut-offs, sweatshirts of any kind and T-shirts (that is, T-shirts with names, logos, messages or any kind of graphics) should not be worn on the altar.
  • dresses or skirts should be no higher than knee-length, necklines should be modest, and no minister should wear anything that shows a bare midriff.

The main thing to remember is that, when we are serving as eucharistic ministers, we are participating in a sacrament, and the way we dress on the altar reflects what our attitude is toward that sacrament.  We understand that times have changed, and that a degree of casualness in how we dress, even for work and going to church, is more acceptable now than it used to be.  Still, attire that is too casual or informal may not be appropriate on the altar.

(These standards are based on a discussion among the members of the St. Pius X Prayer and Worship Committee, and have been reviewed and approved by the members of that committee, by the members of the St. Pius X parish pastoral council, and by Father Farano.)
